was originated by GCTE in 1975 to honor Mrs. Juanita New Abernathy, former State Coordinator of English and Reading, for her outstanding contribution to English Language Arts. Winners of the three statewide awards are recognized as having superior English Language Arts programs, presented ONLY to departments judged outstanding by evaluators. (The award was discontinued in 1996)
